Session Limit

When you create an account on a gambling site, you have to choose and set up a number of things. According to the law, these are “the limits to gambling behaviour.” One of the things you have to specify is how much time you want to spend on a gambling site. Per month, per week, or per day. This is called a session limit. This obligation is stated in Article 4.14 of the Remote gambling decree.
  • The law does not set a maximum time for a session. You have to make this choice yourself. It’s important to think this through carefully. Spending too much time gambling costs you a lot of money. You’ll also have no time left for family, friends, sports, or sleep.
  • Please note: a session limit is not about the time you actually spend gambling. It’s about the time you spend on the website.
  • You are not allowed to exceed the session limit in your account. The provider has to monitor this and close your session when you reach the limit. If you are still in the middle of a gambling game, you may finish that game.
  • If you forget to log out, the time continues to run until you reach the limit. The gambling company cannot ‘give back’ any time to you.
  • You have set a high session limit in your account. As soon as you visit the gambling site, the clock starts ticking. The provider has to intervene if you spend more than 6 hours on the gambling website within 24 hours. The gambling company may then, for example, send you a warning or invite you for a conversation.

This is stated in the Responsible gambling policy rule. A policy rule is not a law. In a policy rule, the Kansspelautoriteit explains how to apply the duty of care correctly. You can find the policy rule here.

Do you still have a high session limit set in your account? It’s best to lower it. This way you protect yourself against gambling too long and losing more money than you can afford.
