Gambling, despair, and recovery

A recent study by Amsterdam UMC reveals that 1 in 3 people with a gambling problem think about suicide at some point. Debt, shame, and mental exhaustion can lead to feelings of despair. These feelings can also arise suddenly, for example after a significant gambling loss. Luuk (37): “By talking about it, you create space for something different and you can gain insight from others to stop earlier, and there is help available. If I can overcome it, then someone else can do it too”.

The study shows that gambling can have severe consequences: people lose money, relationships, and sometimes their homes. This can make them feel very lonely and sad. It’s therefore important to talk about it and seek help in time if you notice that gambling is becoming a problem. Gambling addiction is serious and can significantly damage your life and that of those around you.
